Ring Spotlight Cam Pro Review

Ring Spotlight Cam Pro1558-80

Ring’s Spotlight Cam Pro is one of the company’s premium outdoor security cameras. It features 3D motion detection, which helps reduce false alerts. Combined with a 375-lumen spotlight and 1080p camera — and multiple power options for the device — the Spotlight Cam Pro is best suited for dark areas where floodlights would be overkill.
We installed the Ring Spotlight Cam Pro on our porch and used it for two weeks. Here’s our review of the Ring Spotlight Cam Pro:

Price

The Ring Spotlight Cam Pro comes in four configurations:

  • Ring Spotlight Cam Pro Battery ($229)
  • Ring Spotlight Cam Pro Plug-in ($229)
  • Ring Spotlight Cam Pro Solar ($249)
  • Ring Spotlight Cam Pro Wired ($249)

All three models have a battery compartment as well as a USB-C port on the back, so you can plug it into an external power source; the Solar model also comes with a solar panel, so you won’t have to replace the battery as often if you use it. The Battery and Plug-in models can also plug into a solar panel. Ring sells a large panel for $59 and a small panel for $39. The Wired model is different from the others in the group. It needs to be hardwired into an external power source and doesn’t come with a battery backup.

Unboxing

Inside the box you will find:
  • Spotlight Cam Pro Camera Ring
  • 20-foot power cable with convenient plug-in connection
  • Plug-in Activation Panel
  • Plug-in Nut
  • Wire Plug
  • User Manual
Everything was packaged perfectly and shipped quickly from amazon to us in just a few days

Design

The Spotlight Cam Pro has a more refined design than the older Spotlight Cam Plus. Instead of a bulging plastic dome at the bottom, the Pro has a sleek, angular speaker grille toward the front of the camera.
A large black rectangle on the front houses the camera as well as a series of infrared lights. On either side are two curved LED bars that can emit 375 lumens each. The higher the camera is mounted, the less effective the spotlights become.
Inside are two battery compartments, and in addition to the one included, you can purchase additional batteries for $34 each. These batteries are similar to those used in some Ring doorbells, and they support a micro USB charging port and have a status light that shows when charging. To replace the battery, you need to unscrew the bottom of the Spotlight Cam Pro.

Features

Ring Spotlight Cam Pro helps monitor and protect your outdoor space, you can track and interact with people approaching the camera installation area through the following features:

Video 1080p HDR

The Spotlight Cam Pro shoots 1080p HDR video with a 140-degree horizontal x 80-degree vertical field of view. That’s wider than the Nest Cam (battery), which has a 130-degree diagonal field of view. We mounted the Spotlight Cam Pro just under our side porch, about 15 feet off the ground, which gave us the perfect angle to see the whole scene.
One plus point for the Spotlight Pro’s camera functionality that we found. If you’re concerned about privacy when your camera is pointed at your neighbor’s yard, Ring has a feature in the app called Privacy Zones that lets you darken an area that the camera can see so it can’t be tracked or recorded. This is different from Activity Zones, which tell the camera where to watch for motion or activity, but it can still record everything. The downside to using a privacy zone is that it affects the ability to detect motion because the camera can’t actually see the darkened area.

3D Motion Detection

What makes the Ring Spotlight Cam Pro a “Pro” device is that it features Ring’s 3D Motion technology, which is also used in the Ring Floodlight Cam Pro and Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2. Ring’s 3D Motion Detection essentially uses radar technology to measure the distance of an object from the camera, then starts recording when someone is within the range you select during setup.
With better distance estimation, motion alerts are more accurate, helping to eliminate false alarms.
Another feature that 3D Motion brings to the Spotlight Cam Pro is called Birds Eye View. When enabled, Birds Eye View uses a zoomed-in satellite image of your property to map a person’s path across your property. This feature is particularly useful for determining if a person is going somewhere they shouldn’t be before triggering a motion alert — a possible indicator that they’re up to something bad — or if they’re following a predetermined path.

Two-Way Talk with Audio+

We appreciate the two-way talk feature of the Ring Spotlight Cam Pro. We tested the conversation through the Ring app on our mobile phone and tablet, and the sound quality was clear and echo-free. In addition to talking directly, you can also activate the siren, which will strongly impact anyone near the camera with a loud sound. This is one of the features that can help you increase your security and prevent the worst from happening.

Storage

The Spotlight Cam Pro doesn’t have any form of local storage unless you have Ring Alarm Pro. The Alarm Pro has a microSD card slot on the base station that enables the Ring Edge to store and process all video files locally instead of sending them to Ring’s servers. This is expensive for local storage for a security camera, since you have to buy the alarm system and pay a $20 monthly fee for the Ring Protect Pro plan.
If you don’t have Ring Alarm Pro, you have to rely on Ring’s cloud storage, which requires you to sign up for the Ring Protect plan. Plans start at $3.99 a month for a single camera or $10 a month to cover all Ring cameras installed in your home.
Without the Ring Protect plan, you’ll only get motion alerts and live streaming, along with two-way talk for communication.

Final Thoughts

The Spotlight Cam Pro is a smart camera that’s effective at monitoring outdoor spaces. The spotlights aren’t very bright up high, but at close range, they’re good enough to illuminate an area. The video and image quality is excellent, and combined with advanced motion detection, the Spotlight Cam Pro is a great choice for anyone looking for a high-end home security camera. However, the Ring Spotlight doesn’t have local storage, and you have to pay an additional fee for the Ring Protect service to get the full feature.
